We used Sears over the summer and they were surprisingly efficient and competent . (Had horrible experience with Sears getting an appliance repaired, so laughably bad you wonder how they manage to stay in business.) Duct guys must be independent contractors or something. See More »

  • AC Ductwork mold remediation and responsibility (apologies if this went through twice)

As part of the renovation of my carriage house air condtioning ductwork was placed on the roof. SInce the beginning there were leaks and water damage to the bathroom ceiling. The contractor restored the damage at least 3 times, always attributing it to the fact that I hadn't cleaned the roof drain often enough. Once it happened the night after ihad cleaned it. We flooded the roof to prove it wasn't the problem. I had pointed out a 'dip' in the ductwork, but they said it was just cosmetic and had no bearing on the damage. I hired an expert who said the wa...  More»

  • Forced air duct cleaners?

I have forced air heating in my 3-story brownstone. Since we did a pretty intense reno, there's a lot of construction debris in the vents that needs to be cleaned out, and we figure it makes sense to get all of the ducting fully cleaned.
I have located cleaning companies, but have gotten wildly differing rates for cleaning - one as high as $1200.00, and one as low as $100. Can anyone provide any thoughts on why this is, what one should be spending, and if you have any vendor recommendations?

$1,200 for a 3 story Brownstone sounds very fair. $100.00? Do you really think someone could do that job for a 'C' note? Either they were pulling your leg or it's a hoax. Common sense. Use it. Hell, before I left the plumbing trade, I wouldn't walk into someones house for under $100.00. And that wa...... See More »
  • Venting hood (over stove) to outside in townhouse?

Do townhouses typically vent hood to outside when undergoing renovation? We're planning a hood over our cooktop and our architect is talking to our HVAC person about this but said that a lot of New York residences have hoods that do NOT vent to outside and just recirculate. I'm wondering what the typical solution is - it would seem that townhouses SHOULD vent to outside!  More»

Wherever possible, we vent to the exterior. Recirculating hoods are ok, but if you're someone who likes to cook, or if you grill or stir fry, then you should really have the venting hood. In a townhouse it's usually pretty easy to do. See More »
  • Dryer vent cleaning?

I have a gas-fired dryer that is heating but not drying nearly as well as it used to. I suspect that the venting pipe to the outside is partially blocked. Any suggestions on who to call to clean it out? I haven't found any good recommendations. Thanks!  More»

I used these people: http://www.usaairmanagement.com/ it was so cheap and totally worth it- you should have seen the crud that they removed from my vent. And my dryer worked perfectly again after that. See More »
