It wouldn't take long IF you have an electrical box that can properly support the weight of a fan. This could be a modern box attached to a metal brace between two joists, or an old round box firmly attached around a gas pipe. if you have an unreinforced box, or no ceiling box at all, it's a much bi...... See More »

  • Should I ask electrician for insurance info? Same as contractor?

So I understand if you hire a contractor to do work in your property you are supposed to get his insurance info in case things go awry. Would I follow the same procedure for an electrician? Absolutely ask them if they have insurance. Ask for references. Also, appearance and how the contractor presents themselves should be a good indication of the kind of work they do. If they're dressed messy and all disheveled than expect that kind of work. I sent an apprentice home once because he ha...... See More »

  • My electrician recommendation

I found this electrician from others' recommendations on brownstoner and want to add mine. His name is Alan Riback, 718-284-0920 (wirelights.com). He installed a cooktop and oven for me, as well as the outlet for the diswasher. He was professional and pleasant to deal with and was able to fit in this small job so that I didn't have to wait forever. He dealt effectively with an unexpected complication and didn't charge extra. I highly recommend him and will call on him myself for any future electrical work.  More»

  • Any good references for someone who can fix appliances; also for good electrician?

We have some tenants who have proceeded to break everything in the apartment in the last year including the stove, washer AND dryer, and microwave (twice!). We think that the fridge and dishwasher are next. Some of the stuff is still under manufacturer warranty; others are not. Has anyone in the brownstoner community had any luck with particular individuals or services that fix appliances? Also, any opinion as to whether those 5 or 10 year service plans that stores often sell with appliance are worth it? In the past, we have refused them but now am t...  More»

If you have a mechanical shaft (plumbing is typical), I don't see how a scope will help. A snake should suffice. If you don't have a good mechanical shaft, you could end up with fire blocking and so forth in the way, and you might have to punch a couple of holes in walls here and there.
