  • Kids Party Venues in Brooklyn?

Morning B'Stoners,Does anyone know of any great party venues in Brooklyn for a (soon to be) 7 year
old boy? I reserved a spot at my son's karate school months ago but somehow the
reservation was mysteriously erased and some other family has taken the date
(end of March). Uhhhh. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

  • Backyard Playground Safety Tiles

I'm looking for these things in Brooklyn, or anywhere in the NYC/Nassau County area. Everybody sells the indoor tiles, but I need the ones specifically for outdoor. BJ's carries them with a 4' fall rating. Is there anywhere I can get them with a 6' fall rating? I'd prefer to pick them up as opposed to ordering them online. Thanks.  More»

  • Nanny + twins + stairs

Hi everyone,My wife and I are expecting twins and, as a result, need to upgrade to a 2BR apartment. Logistically, an elevator building is ideal so a nanny can easily stroll the babies in and out. We live in Carroll Gardens and would love to stay, but there aren't many elevator buildings to come by.The alternative is a walk-up building, but our hesitation is that when the nanny takes the babies outside, he/she would need to carry one baby to the first floor, leave it unattended in the stroller, and then go back upstairs to get the second. I'm sligh...  More»

We don't have twins but we have one baby and one toddler who is not above refusing to walk up the stairs on occassion and we live on the top floor of a brownstone. We moved there from an elevator building in Manhattan and the stairs haven't been as big an issue as I feared. The nanny could wear on...... See More »
  • Seeking advice - buying into family brownstone

My husband's family owns a wonderful brownstone, and we rent the bottom floor. We are now exploring buying into the brownstone and taking over another half or full floor as part of the purchase. I want to make sure we are thoughtful about this and would like advice on how to proceed. We are all going into this with the best of intentions - we have good relationships with each other, and we all want to make sure that we keep these in tact as we move forward. Here are my many questions. I welcome all advice: 1/ The brownstone needs some work and we wo...  More»

  • Brownstone baby gates

I know I read posts in the past years about how people have set up baby gates in their brownstone stairwells, but I can't figure out how to do a productive archive search. We're creating an owners triplex and will have a klutzy 2 year old and a newborn. Our architect suggested building custom gates that would be mounted to the newly replastered walls. The GC actually suggested drilling into the newel post to mount gates there. I'd like to keep both the kids' skulls and the house intact. I don't want to have to do repairs to the walls or the original wood...  More»

A simple solution is to figure out which rooms you want to contain them in, and put in retractable gates on those doorways instead of the stairs. No matter where you put them you will have to do repairs, but the damage is minimal. We spent a small fortune on baby gates and they actually only go...... See More »
  • Contemplating move to Crown Heights

My husband and I are contemplating moving to Crown Heights with our baby, but we are curious about what others think of the 'hood. We love the housing stock and proximity to the museum/botanical gardens, but we haven't seen too many baby carriages in the neighborhood (in spite of what we read in the NYT and WSJ), and are also a little worried about crime, schools (though that's several years away), etc. Any thoughts on the area? We would probably be several blocks out from Franklin...  More»

  • recommendation for a babysitter/daycare company?

I know this is kind of outside of the scope of this site, which is mainly for homeowners and professionals. But i figure a lot of you here also have kids and was wondering if anyone can give me a good recommendation for a babysitter/daycare company? We have 2 kids and have construction going on in the house. It gets really noisy and dirty at times and would love to find an alternative location for them to be during the day. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance!  More»

  • Noisy children/permissive parents on my floor

I would greatly appreciate advice on dealing with noisy children next door from my Brooklyn Heights rental apartment. The children next door are about 3 (they're twin boys) and from the moment they wake up (usually around 5:45 to 6 a.m.) until bedtime they're either screaming, crying, whining, banging on the walls, slamming doors, running wind sprints up and down the apartment, playing loud games or using the common hallway as their playground (their parents use it to store their double-wide stroller and scooters). They're on their third nanny in nine mo...  More»
