We've been looking for a reliable handyman to perform some simple, yet tedious and time-consuming jobs around the house. Our neighbours gave us a few recommendations, but those guys are quoting us $40/hr or even $50/hr.
I never had to hire handymen before, but those rates seem preposterously high to me. How much do people in brooklyn normally pay for a reliable handyman? More»

a wall switch in our hallway is broken. this seems like a simple thing to replace, but the handymen whom i've spoken to don't seem to want to touch anything electrical.
do i need an electrician? if so, any recommendations?
or: any recommendations of a handyman who can/will do this?

Hi, I just wanted to add to the chorus of recommendations for Brian Piersol. I found him here on Brownstoner and hired him to repair the drywall from a washer/dryer hookups install. The plumbers made a real mess of things and Brian did a fantastic job fixing the walls. He even replaced one of the drain connections that the plumbers didn't seal properly. He was professional, pleasant, on time, very tidy, and a total perfectionist. I recommend him highly. His phone number is 646-831-6481 his email is firstname.lastname@example.org. More»

I am looking for a handy-person who is reliable, reasonable, and able to complete a number of fairly small but diverse jobs (in a park slope brownstone). Currently need a toilet leak repaired, a gas lamp fixed, and wall sconces installed - but I would like to have someone I can call whenever there is something minor that needs repair. All recommendations welcome! More»

Just purchased a new 12,000 BTU window A/C unit which I thought I could install on my own since I'd done the last one, but didn't realize that the old one had a slide-in chassis, which makes for a much easier installation and this one does not. Wouldn't need a heavy-duty HVAC person, just someone handy enough to know how to do this and strong enough to lift the damned thing. Has some potential trickiness since it is going into a window that has a storm window and that makes the whole leveling thing a little tricky. Anyone know of anyone? I'm in Boerum Hi... More»

Hi- Looking for some input from any regular Brownstoner readers on companies who do thru-wall A/C installation. We live in a detatched frame, and are looking for some help with this- a top floor installation, with vinyl siding. Anyone have experience with contractors who have done similar?
I'm likely to do the framing and inside wall prep and finish, but don't have a ladder for the outside, or the siding knowledge and materials.

My partner and I are nearing the end of a big renovation and we need to do a bit of a clean up. Not just the usual construction clean up, but going through some of our belongings that have ended up displaced during the work, sorting it, throwing some out, some to the attic, some to the basement...
My partner is 5 months pregnant and I travel a lot so she just needs a couple of able bodies that can help her with all of the this over the next coulpe of weeks. No real skills needed, just strong an friendly and able to speak English (or even Greek).
