Who is responsible for cleaning the carpet in a tenants' unit?

I rent out the upstairs of my house and the tenant has exclusive use of stairway which is carpeted.  Whose responsibility is it to clean this carpet -mine or the tenants'?

I would think that unless you specifically spelled it out in their lease then it's your responsibility, like it normally is in most buildings.

Landlord's responsibility unless otherwise specified.  My garden level rental has a public hallway but the tenant use is about 99% and my use 1%.  I used to clean it but for the past 10 years, before lease signing, I specifiy cleaning it as the tenant's responsibility.  No one has ever complained.
