mechanical or digital timer for light schedule control in hallway?

The lights in the hallway of our house are controled by a mechanical timer, branded Tork. The timer has bailed on us for a while now and I would like to replace it.
I was wondering if anybody has experience with timers and whether it is advisable to stick with the old mechanical timers, which basically have a mechanical clock in them or whether digital timers are to be preferred?
