Alternate Side of Street Parking

9:34 AM 02/15/2013

We are moving to Brooklyn and driving a Budget truck.  Could somebody advise on alternate side of the street parking for Clifton Place, between Classon and Franklin (Zip: 11238)?  We don't want to arrive and not be able to offload our furniture.
I've tried looking it up on the Internet but can't find the info.

In many (most? all?) Brooklyn neighborhoods the police will "tolerate" double parking during alternate side hours and the convention is to leave a sheet of paper with your contact information on the dashboard, so that anyone double-parked in can contact you. Be warned that expensive double parking tickets are issued very soonafter alt side hours end and there's no absolute guarantee that you can't be ticketed DURING those hours since double parking is always illegal.

I do not live there, but I'm pretty sure that alt. side is 11am-12:30pm, Monday and Thursday, on the north side of Clifton Place, and on the south side, 11am-12:30pm, Tuesday and Friday. So plan your move for the day that alt. side is IN EFFECT on your side of the street. Arrive no later than one-half hour before end of alt. side (no later than noon) to grab a spot in front of your building.

Be aware that the '5 minute rule' applies only to meters, not alt. side.  A neighbor of mine got a ticket w/ a time just 3 minutes before the end of alt. side.  But the only time there have been tickets for double parking was when someone got parked in & phoned the police who gave tickets to everyone - their reason being that technically all were in violation.

They don't typicall tow for alternate side parking violations.  It's a $45 ticket.

    • Worst case in the scheme of things (e.g. a quote from moving company for $12,000) we can handle $45, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

As an aside, commercial vahicles are a special class in New York. You cannot take it on any parkway and you cannot park them overnight on a residential street. Good luck and congrats.

    • Thanks for the heads-up. Where does one park a commercial vehicle overnight? We were lanning to arrive in the evening. (But with this advice we might just stay overnight at a hotel in NJ

    • Commercial trucks get parked overnight in parking lots that have the space for larger vehicles.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have commented here.  You have all been extremely helpful.  We're driving from Louisiana which at our age is risky to begin with!  You are easing the pain. Thanks again and we can't wait to be settled in Brooklyn.  What an adventure!

You can park the truck overnight on any commercial avenue (lots of retail and parking meters/muni-meters are a good indicator). Be sure to look at the signs closely as they may do street cleaning 6 days a week beginning at an early hour.

    • So if there are parking meters it's a commercial street? (What is a muni-meter? Come to that, what's a retail meter?) Would Lafayette Ave. be a commercial avenue? Also, do you know of larger vehicle parking space around Lafayette/Classon. Thanks again for this enlightening info.

Retail means a street with stores, not houses.  A muni-meter is a kind of parking meter.
Think hard before you decide to leave a fully packed truck on the stree overnight.  I did when when young and poor and my stuff in the truck virtually worthless (college furniture purchased third-hand or found left in alleys), but would definitely not do so with my stuff now.  I vote for staying overnight in New Jersey.
Also, as someone who has had furniture stolen while moving in Brooklyn, you must have a person to watch the truck while you are loading and unloading, else you have to lock the truck up every time you go inside. Also have someone watching any stuff piled on the sidewalk - it can and does walk off when you are inside.  And lock your building door behind you when you go in and out if someone is not nearby watching the door.  (One person outside can watch truck, sidewalk stuff, and door at once.)

You are being so helpful.  Thank you again.  Advice taken.  The great adventure begins next Sunday from Baton Rouge LA.  I'll report on Brownstoner how it went.

More than once i've intentionally taken an alt. sides ticket when moving.   The fine was cheap (35-55, typically) and in the grand scheme of moving expenses, was worth not having to wait around until 10am, noon, or whatever other arbitrary time is given... and definitely worth not having to lug heavy things (i have a lot of solid wood and metal furniture that doesn't come apart) an extra 30 feet from the nearest hydrant (the only other spot i'd otherwise be able to use for a truck and unload)  - side note :  the whole street sweeping rules thing - what a scam. Never once, while moving, did a street sweeper come down the block for me to have blocked it.. but the spirit of the ticket you receive is because you hinder the cleaning of the streets.  In my current neighborhood, i'll see a street sweeper in spring and summer only... and then only once every 2 weeks, even though 5 alternate sides days have passed between each visit.
