My parents live in a house that is next to an apartment building. For the past 6 months someone from the building next door has been every night dropping a poo in a napkin into the backyard. My brother is a police officer and he told my parents nothing can be done unless you see the person doing it. Has anyone ever set up an survaillance that is motion activated. I am not going to get into how wrong this is and how it happens several times a week. Nor the amount of stress its put my elderely parent under. I was going to bag it all up and leave it in the lobby of the building but I want to be smart about this - thoughts/considerations/suggestions? I am not above beating someone with a bat so I am trying to remain calm.

I have a similar problem with neighbors throwing trash into my yard. I plan on setting up a webcam out the back window and running something simple like Yawcam to record whenever it detects motion. That will probably not work for you in the dark, though. You could try to get a nighttime IR camera like this ( http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-F...pd_cp_pc_1) and see if that does the trick.
That will only tell you who is doing it, though. How you actually deal with it is another matter.

I would first put up a sign asking that it stop. That usually will make the person feel like a jackass, and will also alert your other neighbors to be keeping an eye out for the jackass. Only a real prick would continue but most will find another way to dispose of it.

You may be dealing with somebody who has dementia. My upstairs landlords at one time had their grandparents living with me, unbeknownst to me, and one of them dropped food in a napkin in front of my door a couple of times a week. Spaghetti with sauce, sausages, sandwiches, etc. Until I saw it happening I had no clue of where it came from. When I told my landlords they were shocked to hear but took care of it.
