Thru-wall a/c

3:22 PM 01/25/2013

I'm thinking of adding a thru-wall a/c in the parlor floor center room of a semi-detached. There's already a small wide-ish window there, unfortunately too shallow for an a/c. What would be involved in enlarging the opening or (I'd prefer) making an opening below the window for a sleeve? I figure since the opening is already there, stress is less of an issue? Who would I get to do this?
Also any thoughts about whether one a/c could effectively cool the whole floor (750 sq ft).

You could try J & R Television & Air Conditioning on 7th Ave in Park Slope. I think they'd be able to arrange a thru the wall installation as well as selling you the AC. You could also get a handyman to do something like this. A 15000 BTU AC would probably do it for the whole floor, and you could get one that works with a standard outlet. Models with higher BTUs may be more of a project if you need to add a 240 volt circuit. Check the info here ...
