Need Affordable Gardeners To Lay Sod in Bed-Stuy/Clinton Hill

11:21 AM 04/18/2012

We do not need any fancy landscapers to do this simple work.  We just need good reliable, affordable, hard-working workers with gardening experience who know how to lay sod and won't charge an arm and a leg.  This is for a yard in Bed-Stuy.  Recommendations appreciated.  Experience required.

Kings Country Nursery in PLG installs sod. I think they said $2.50 to $3 a square foot installed? I can't remember. But just call them up on the phone and they'll tell you.

I recommend you call Kings County nurseries with the dimensions of the area.  They will calculate how many pieces you need.  Ask for a quote to have it installed as well (they do have a side landscaping business.)  It's a fairly straightforward process, and depending on the size, something you could easily do yourself in two afternoons (one to level the ground, remove any rocks and add some fertilizer, and one to lay the 2x5 rectangles.)  There are plenty of DIY guides online.
You need to have a plan for irrigation, as new lawns need to be watered every day, and a plan for mowing (I like the Mascot reel mower, but I've heard a good review of the Fiskars as well.)

So happy to have a rec for a reel mower. Everyone inc Kings keeps telling me you gotta use a power mower on sod. Not that we have sod, and that's one of the reasons we don't.

    • Mopar,I didn't see your comment at the time, but just in case you look back and find this...there are three secrets to successful mowing:- proper soil preparation: surface raking isn't enough. The ground needs to be tilled, amended with fertilizer and compost, so the sod can root properly.- the first month really matters: the sod needs to be watered everyday, so if it doesn't rain, you need to have irrigation on a timer. Also, you shouldn't walk on new sod, again for proper rooting.- you need to mow when the grass is not too low, not high, and especially not too WET! Wait at least 24 hours after any rain or watering before you mow. This is especially important with new sod.The additional recommendation for reel mowers is that you can't go for the cheesy models with terrible blade design. It's just like knives or scissors: the fabrication of a proper blade is expensive, so cheap ones are usually terrible, and tear at what you are trying to cut.

Give New Eco a call @ 646-770-3602.  Deliver and/or install sod.
