Any experience w/ Aspen American Insurance?

They're underwriting for the Brownstone Agency, whose reputation is good, and the quote was reasonable. I'm wondering if anyone here has ever dealt with Aspen on an actual claim.

I suspect with Brownstone behind you they'll honor your claim properly but that's just a guess.

    • That's a reassuring thought. I'm fishing, because none of the folks who've recommended the agency to me have ever actually filed a claim, but in the absence of evidence, I'll take reassurance!

I did have Brownstone and filed a claim. Granted it was a different insurance company (they keep on changing who they write for....not very reassuring). It took 7 months, tons of angry letters, and at least half a dozen "check is in the mail" conversations before getting paid (and then with a substantial hold back that would only get released once I proved the cash was spent on exactly what the claim was made for) . This was nearly 10 years ago, so they make have cleaned up their act. But they played a delay game like no other company I have ever seen.

    • What an awful story. It certainly gives me pause. But I do think that process is more in the hands of the actual insurer and not the agent, which is precisely why I was searching for some experience with Aspen. Who do you use now?

Unfortunately not. Brownstone has its own claims department. They try to blame the insurers for bad claims handling when it's them. I had a water damage claim that they stalled on for almost a year! I asked my broker about Aspen and was told they are new to this kind of coverage so nobody knows how they will handle claims, or if they will stick with Brownstone very long. I agree that is concerning that they (or someone) keeps changing who Brownstone writes for. I ended up getting a broker to try and help me settle the claim. After that, my broker got me quotes from other carriers to compare and I selected the one from Distinguished Programs who writes with Chartis/AIG.
