Advise on how to deal w wood burning restaurant smell?

11:20 AM 05/09/2012

Hello Brownstoners,
I live in Clinton Hill and a new place (Speedy Romeo) opened on our corner that does wood burning pizza.  The woodburning oder can be overwelming even with the windows closed.  It's random though, and seems to depend on the weather.  I've talked to the restaraunt and the guys there were polite but the say that they can't afford a proper diffusor for their exhaust (which vents out on the roof currently) like other neighboring restaraunts have.
I've registered complaints to 311.  311 called me back and said they knew there would be trouble with this oven but they needed more complaints.  It's tough because you can register the complaint one day when the smoke smell is bad, then when the DEP people come the wind is blowing the other way.
Anyone have any advise on how to deal with this one?  The drag is I like their food.  I wish they could be better neighbors.

Well, 311 is telling you you need to organize a campaign of complaints, for them to address it.  i would do that.   Others are likely bothered by it, too.  Is a proper diffusor required by law, or only if neighbors complain? I would ask a lawyer who knows this area of law, were I in your shoes, as there may be other avenues you can pursue as an individual.

Also, consider that the noise of better exhaust may be more annoying than the smell, depending on your proximity.

Pizza is also too high in cholesterol.  I am sure Bloomberg will ban it in his 4th term.

You can smell the smoke for blocks around here.  Sound wouldn't be an issue.

The pizza is indeed yummy but my towels smell like I've been on a camping trip.

How much is a diffuser?  Why don't you and some of your neighbors offer to help pay for the diffuser in exchange for free pizza?  That might make everyone happy.

Diffusor systems start at 10K but it is something a restaraunt should have to be a good neighbor.
