Help! How much (whether?) to tip carpet installer?

I'm having a runner put in and, never having had carpet before, just realized that I have no idea whether or how much to tip the guy. I supplied the runners (individual ones that they are stringing together), and they are going on painted wooden stairs that are currently bare. Can anyone help with what might be appropriate?

    If you are satisfied with the workmanship will you share the name of installer? I need a similar job done. For this kind of work I have tipped each worker $20 each for a half day and double that for a full day.

    Thanks for the comment. We used Better Carpet Warehouse on Atlantic. I am not experienced in this area but my sense is that the owner is great; the specific guy who did ours was kindof meh. In his defense, I'm a total wimp and I should have checked part way through the job and given him some direction. (Our runner is wide horizontal stripes and they are not totally straight across each one due to give in the weave and the steps themselves--and him not being a perfectionist.) So I guess I'd say I'd call them again but try to be a little more of a hardass.

    Yikes, I wish you had mentioned who you were considering. I have used them in the past and while the sales associates, Edwin and Wayner are great, their installer is horrible. I had to rip up my carpet in less than a year and throw it out. I would not use their installer for any work in the future.

    Yes, Edwin was great and I was lulled into a false sense of security. Ours is temporary by design, so it's only my pickiness that is really causing problems. It looks great, but all I see is crooked stripes.

    I have a carpet which i bought the last month. I was wondering if i am going to send it to a professional cleaner but it would cost a lot. Any tips on cleaning my carpet on my own? Hope you can help me.Thanks a lot!
