Deck costs?

9:21 AM 04/30/2012

We are putting a deck on our brownstone and want to do steel frame with wood on top, and have been quoted a price of almost 29K for the deck and wood (20'?X8').  I was browsing the site and saw someone quoting what sounded like a similar project for 15k.  Does 29K seem reasonable?  The fabricator is coming through our contractor, so we haven't comparison shopped, but I am thinking that we should based on the other poster's number.  Thoughts?

I am no expert, but just shopped for a steel deck estimate for 2 decks (one small one, one full sized one), and the estimate I am going with is less than a third of that. I am not doing any wood though. Have you had Lopopolo come in? They came in with the lowest estimate, and come highly recommended on brownstoner.

    • wood probably increases costs substantially, especially if you are going with something like ipe

I was quoted $19K for the same sized deck in wood and metal.

i'm in the process of getting a deck built in a similar size. maybe it was my post that you read... it depends on the wood you use. ipe is pricier, but if it's a steel structured deck with pressure treated wood (cedar i believe?), my guess is that it's more in the 17-20k range. it all depends on the railings, decking material, etc. it doesn't hurt to get estimates from others (such as lopopolo, as well as sketch and hammer, which i've read mentioned here various times).

    Brooklynreno,
I've built a lot of hybrid steel/Ipe decks, and your price is way too high...probably double...than my decks. I'm the woodworker, and Lopopolo Ironworks does the iron substructure.  Check out my website.

I'd also get an estimate from Decks R Us.

Hey guys, how much did you pay for the steel beams alone and how did you installed them. I live in a four stories building and I am looking to build a roof deck with steel beams?
Have you used a crane? That must be expensive, I guess...
    Thanks, r
